Doug Deaver,
Director of Purchasing,
Cabrillo College Doug was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN. After attending college at Purdue University (B.S. and M.S. in management) he moved to San Francisco to take a position with Crown Zellerbach Corporation. From there he worked in operations and senior management for Sierra Detroit Diesel Allison, Grand Auto, and West Marine. He moved to the public sector in 1994 as Director of General Services for Santa Cruz City Schools. For the past three years he has been the Director of Purchasing at Cabrillo College. He enjoys outdoor activities such as kayaking, bicycling, running, and golf, and he enjoys traveling with Diane, his wife of 17 years, to see their two daughters - one in Mexico City and one in Anchorage. Doug has been involved over the past 10 years with the Aptos Lions, Santa Cruz Rotary, and the local Red Cross chapter. |
Jennifer DeToy,
Community Relations & Events Manager, Plantronics, Inc. Jennifer is the youngest of seven children, born to a career Army soldier and a housewife. She was born at Fort Leavenworth, KS, and has lived in Kansas, Colorado, Maryland, Hawaii, Illinois and California. She received her Bachelor of Science in Communications from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, moved to Santa Clara immediately after graduation, and then to Santa Cruz in 1992. Jennifer has been a Community Relations and Events manager at Plantronics since July 2000. Prior to joining Plantronics, she spent nine years in public education and four years in Silicon Valley as a corporate trainer and operations manager. She enjoys volunteer service in the community including delivering meals to the homebound through Meals On Wheels, teaching Internet classes to senior citizens at the Senior Computer Center, and raising funds and hunger awareness through Second Harvest Food Bank. Jennifer also enjoys traveling, camping, and backpacking. |
Balicia Embernate, Service Officer, Coast Commercial Bank Balicia was born in Montclaire, CA, and moved to Santa Cruz with her parents by the age of one. She attended Soquel High School and later went on to study at Cabrillo College. Balicia came to work with Coast Commercial Bank seven years ago as a teller at the downtown office. She later moved to New Accounts and then on to Service Officer where she assists in bank management and operations. Throughout the years, Balicia has had the opportunity to be involved in many community activities, from serving on the allocations committee of the United Way, to Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake. Among her hobbies are snowboarding, walking, riding her bike and spending time at the local Santa Cruz beaches with family and friends. |
Chris Enright,
Board Member,
Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau Chris was born and raised and Santa Cruz County. He attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he obtained a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture. After graduating he returned to Santa Cruz County to work in the family nursery business. Enright Nursery was founded by Chris's father Austin Enright and has been a wholesale orchid nursery in Santa Cruz County since 1959. Chris is now the President of Enright Nursery LLC, where he grows orchids with his wife, Annie, in Watsonville. He has also served on the Farm Bureau Board of Directors since 2000. In addition to growing orchids, Chris also enjoys spending time with his wife camping, gardening, and taking sunset walks on the beach. |
Bruce Fox,
Controller,
Santa Cruz Community Credit Union Bruce was hired as the Controller of Santa Cruz Community Credit Union in September of 2001. He received his Bachelors degree in Economics from UC Santa Barbara in 1984, and a CPA certificate in 1986. Prior to that, he was a principal in a recycling business. In that life, he was active in local government, and served as President of the Northern California chapter of the recycling industry trade association. His new affiliation with the Santa Cruz Community Credit Union is particularly rewarding due to the many community development programs that have been instituted through the organization (i.e. low interest loans to childcare providers, asset development programs, and regranting of funds to enhance playground safety). Bruce and his wife, Cindy, just had twin girls born September 8th at Dominican and are thrilled by the additions to their family. In whatever spare time Bruce finds, he enjoys bicycling, traveling, and teaching windsurfing. |
Kathryn Gargan,
Student
Kathryn is a third generation Los Gaton who returned home in 1998 after more than twenty years of globe trotting and working in the hospitality industry. She has managed and owned restaurants in Miami Beach, San Francisco, Stuttgart, Germany, and most recently in Carmel Valley. She is also a former Dive Instructor and has actively volunteered through the years with organizations dedicated to the preservation of marine environments including two seasons as a docent at Ano Nuevo State Park. When her son graduated from high school in 2000, it was her turn to learn. Kathryn has always considered Santa Cruz her home away from home and decided this is where she would settle. Now a full time student at Cabrillo College, Kathryn is interested in urban planning with an emphasis on traditional communities and in becoming an active and empowered citizen. She enjoys photography, gardening, bicycling and spending time with her sweetheart. |
Lainie Gray, Analyst,
Santa Cruz Department of Child Support Services Born and raised in Santa Cruz, Lainie grew up in the same house her mother was raised in on Branciforte Drive. She is proud to be a fourth-generation Santa Cruzan, a home-owner in Watsonville and the mother of an 8 year old daughter, Tylor, who is the light of her life. She has been with the County of Santa Cruz for over four years and is pleased to have moved up through the ranks to currently work as an Analyst with the Department of Child Support Services. Lainie is attending San Jose State University part time, majoring in African-American Studies and anticipates graduating with her B.A. in 2005. Her future goals include furthering her education and becoming a Senior Analyst with the County. In her not so spare time she enjoys family vacations, going to the gym, reading, being with family, and just hanging out with her daughter. |
Sally Green, Executive Director
Jacob's Heart Children's Cancer Association Sally has called the Santa Cruz area home for 26 years, always finding her way back after adventures in other cities and countries. She received her Bachelor of Science in Business with an emphasis in marketing and public relations from San Francisco State University and a Masters in Nonprofit Management from the New School for Social Research in Manhattan. From 1995-1997 she served in the Peace Corps as Executive Director of the Women in Business Foundation in Western Samoa. Currently, Sally is the Executive Director of the Jacob's Heart Children's Cancer Association, an organization that exists to improve the life of children with cancer and decrease the burdens faced by their families. Her professional background also includes grant administration, volunteer recruitment and training, administering economic development programs for women and youth, and plantation management. In her spare moments she enjoys reading, surfing, gardening, and wandering the beach with her dog. |
Donna Henderson,
Manager, Quality Improvement,
Central Coast Alliance for Health Donna has lived in Northern California for 23 years. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Currently, she is the Quality Improvement Manager at Central Coast Alliance for Health, a non-profit agency that administers the Medi-Cal and Healthy Families programs in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. Donna has over 25 years experience in the health care industry. Her professional roles have included hospital administration, development of case management and severity of illness analysis systems, and consulting in managed health care environments. She has been a guest lecturer at a number of educational and professional organizations and was a contributing author to the book Best Practices in Medical Management. Donna's volunteer work has included rape crisis intervention, support for people with AIDS, and collaboration in a non-profit women's bookstore. In her leisure time, Donna enjoys gardening, embroidery, reading, and travel. |
Marie Henley, Owner,
Travel Experience on Call and Sous City Catering Marie Alyse Henley is originally from Chicago, moving to Santa Cruz in 1976. After years of working for Pan American Airlines in Chicago she decided to try new things in her new home. You've Got Me Flying Kite Shop and the Renaissance Women's Art Gallery were her first efforts. But experience prevailed and she opened Pacific Harbor Travel in 1981 and sold it in 1993. Now Marie has Travel Experience on Call, specializing in international travel only. She also leads groups to Nepal, Kenya and Europe. In addition, Marie is an Event Coordinator for Sous City Catering which fulfills her love of cooking and creating great events. On a more personal level, Marie has been with her partner 16 years and enjoys playing softball, gardening, travel and cooking - and her little dog Lily! |
Gretchen Iliff,
Superintendent of Parks, County of Santa Cruz Gretchen spent her early years in rural Indiana growing up with seven brothers and sisters. Her family moved to Santa Cruz in 1968 and settled in La Selva Beach. She graduated from Aptos High School, attended UC Santa Cruz and completed a B.A. in Psychology at UC Davis. After graduation she began working with handicapped children and attending Sacramento State University, pursuing a Masters degree in Recreation and Park Administration. She has worked in this field since 1980, including the past 12 years for the County of Santa Cruz Parks Department. Gretchen truly enjoys working with the staff and community on the development and maintenance of County Parks. She is married and has two boys and lives on 3/4 of an acre in the Aptos area. Gretchen's interests motocross riding, home improvement projects, getting together with her siblings and spending time with her sons, Jackson and Nate. |
Rashida Jackson,
Recreation Supervisor, City of Watsonville Rashida Jackson always enjoyed being involved in high school sports and city recreation programs, so it was only natural to make a career out of it. Originally from King City, CA, Rashida currently lives in Gilroy with her family. She graduated from Fresno State University with a B.S. in Recreation Administration and has been working for the City of Watsonville Parks and Community Services Department for a little over eight months. Anyone who knows Rashida can verify that she absolutely loves her job. She enjoys working for the City and interacting with the community. Rashida has worked for various City Parks and Recreation Departments including: King City, Fresno and, most recently Modesto. In her free time (when she is not planning recreation activities for others), Rashida enjoys volleyball, kickboxing, aerobics, and most of all, spending time with her husband Seandale and their 22-month old son, Jaliel. |
Julie Jacobs, Assistant to the Director
UC Santa Cruz - Center for Justice, Tolerance & Community Julie Jacobs is Assistant to the Director (Manuel Pastor) and Researcher at the Center for Justice, Tolerance, and Community (CJTC) at UC Santa Cruz. Part of this work entails acting as a liaison between Santa Cruz community organizations and UC Santa Cruz's "city on a hill." She is an active member of CUE - the union for clericals at the university, and enjoys working alongside her colleagues to fight for a living wage, reasonable parking rates, and safer working conditions for all workers. Julie also collaborates with local social justice activists on issues such as affordable housing and youth development. She lives in the Seabright neighborhood with her beautiful sister and wonderful boyfriend and enjoys camping, biking, reading, organizing, napping, drawing, long walks and road trips. |
Bob Kennedy, Director of Environmental Health
Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency Bob was born and raised in the communities of Hayward and Tracy where his family farmed from the early 1900s until 1977. Bob graduated from California State University, Chico in 1976 in Biological and Chemical Sciences. Until September 2001, Bob had spent 18 years as the Director of Environmental Health for Inyo County, CA. There he conducted the regulatory oversight of public health/environmental protections and managed the animal control and mosquito abatement programs of the county, as well as coordinating the Office of Emergency Services. In his present position, Bob is directly responsible for a broad variety of regulatory and public service functions to ensure consistent public health/environmental protection are delivered locally with an additional specialized water quality planning role. He has a wonderful, loving wife of 25 years and two children presently attending college. His hobbies include swimming, woodworking, hiking and trying to do that surfing thing. |
Meghan Kinney, Criminalist,
California Department of Justice Meghan was born and raised in Santa Cruz. She graduated from Santa Cruz High School and then moved to Santa Barbara to attend college. Throughout college, Meghan returned to Santa Cruz in the summers to work for the City of Santa Cruz as a Beach Lifeguard and Junior Lifeguard Instructor. In 1996, she graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a B.S. in Microbiology. She returned to Santa Cruz and briefly attended Cabrillo College. In 1997 she went to work for the California Department of Justice Regional Criminalistics Laboratory. As a Criminalist, Meghan has had the opportunity to work with most of the local law enforcement agencies and district attorneys' offices. She is active in several scientific and law enforcement professional organizations and has volunteered locally as a board member of the Association for Women in Science. Meghan's spare time is spent enjoying her family and playing at the beach. |
