Linette Abbott,
Deputy Water Director/Engineering Manager, City of Santa Cruz Water Department Linette grew up in east Tennessee. She moved to California after graduating from the University of Tennessee with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1980. After working for the State of California for 16 years in Sacramento, she relocated to the more scenic Santa Cruz area in 1996 and began working for the City of Santa Cruz Water Department. One of Linette's mottos is, "Learning is a lifelong process!" After obtaining a Master's of Public Policy and Administration in 1996 from California State University Sacramento, she decided to pursue a Master's in Civil Engineering/Water Resources at San Jose State University as well, and will complete that degree in May of 2003. Linette is an active member of Santa Cruz Bible Church and a leader in the Single Adult Ministry devoted to healing people suffering from broken dreams. She enjoys reading, scuba diving, hiking and backpacking. |
Faye August,
Vice President of Human Relations & Training, Bay Federal Credit Union Faye has enjoyed a varied and interesting professional career. For over 25 years, she has been involved in positions that have revolved around people. The most rewarding of her experiences is her current endeavor with Bay Federal Credit Union. For the past three years she has primarily been responsible for employee professional development. She loves her work at Bay Federal because the culture allows people to be who they are, excel at their passion, and balance their personal lives with their professional lives. She joined Bay Federal after spending 10 years consulting in change management, leadership development, team building, problem solving, and process improvement. Her consulting career allowed her travel all over the world with her assignments, primarily in the Far East and South America. In her spare time, she enjoys golf, reading, and cooking. |
Kim Austin,
Investigations Captain, Watsonville Police Department Kim was born and raised in Monterey County. She has lived in various locations of the county her entire life. Kim has worked for Watsonville Police Department for the past 19 years, serving in a variety of assignments. Currently she is the Investigations Captain. Kim has two sons, Michael and Matthew. She has been married to husband Steve for 21 years. Steve is a Deputy Coroner with Monterey County Sheriff's office. In their leisure time the Austin family loves to be outdoors, backpacking, water-skiing, snow skiing or whatever else seems interesting. |
Amanda Ballard,
Program Coordinator, Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County Amanda moved to Santa Cruz just over five years ago to attend UC Santa Cruz. After graduating with a degree in Political Science, she joined the Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County as the Program Coordinator for the local government volunteer programs. She coordinates CitySERVE, the City of Santa Cruz volunteer and internship program and the Volunteer Initiative Program, the County of Santa Cruz volunteer and internship program. She loves working with volunteers and with the excellent public employees of Santa Cruz City and County. Amanda also represents the Third District on the Santa Cruz County Women's Commission and serves as the Co-Chair of the Women in Leadership Taskforce of the Commission. She also enjoys volunteering on local campaigns, traveling and spending time with friends. |
Adriana Bare,
Adminisrative Services Officer II County of Santa Cruz - Mental Health & Substance Abuse Division Adriana was born, raised and educated in Montevideo, Uruguay. Adriana was an exchange student in Indiana in the 1980s and that experience changed her outlook on life. She got a taste of how small the world is when looked at one person at a time, and enjoyed breaching linguistic and cultural barriers. In 1992 she received her degree in Systems Analysis from ORT University. Adriana began working for the County of Santa Cruz in 1993, and has used her skills to create meaningful reporting systems for Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. She now fills a general administrative role focusing on health care financing, business operations and personnel. She values teamwork and an environment conducive to growth. Adriana spends her personal time with her wonderful husband and their lovely two-year old daughter. They are expecting a new addition to the family in February 2003. |
Sandra Barker,
Food & Nutrition Director, Watsonville Community Hospital Sandra is a native Californian and has resided in Santa Cruz County for the past three years. She has worked as the Director of Food and Nutrition in an acute care setting for the past 12 years. She attended Modesto Junior College and is certified in Food and Nutrition Management. Formerly, Sandra was a co-owner of a corporation located in the Bay Area. Sandra is a single parent of three boys 17 to 22 years old. Her children work for the family business and attend Junior College at Mt. Diablo, Ohlone and Cabrillo. Sandra has participated in many community events within the San Joaquin Valley including, Boys and Girls Club telethon, Sober Graduation, Hospice Tree of Lights, Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Sober Night Out, to mention a few. She enjoys gardening, walks at her favorite beach with her two dogs and taking in the local music and arts. |
Frances Barrios,
Director of Community Services, Planned Parenthood Mar Monte Frances has lived in Santa Cruz for the past six years. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz. In the past three and a half years, Frances has climbed the ranks at Planned Parenthood, starting out as a volunteer, then as a Health Educator, and now as the Director of Community Services. In her role as Director of Community Services, she is responsible for overseeing and implementing Planned Parenthood's education and outreach programs for both Santa Cruz and Monterey County. In her spare time, Frances enjoys hanging out with family and friends, eating out, reading, listening to music and going to the beach. |
Erin Bernall,
Development Officer, Skills Center Erin Bernall relocated to Santa Cruz County in 2000 from the Lake Tahoe area where she was the public relations manager at Northstar-at-Tahoe ski and golf resort. Her professional expertise and background is in public relations serving myriad organizations in such industries as travel and tourism, public affairs, and real estate development. Erin earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism with a public relations emphasis and Spanish minor from California State University, Long Beach. She is one of 6,000 public relations professionals nationwide with Accredited Public Relations credentials. Erin currently serves the Skills Center as a fund development officer and operates her own public relations consulting business. In her spare time, Erin enjoys hitting the beaches and hiking trails of Santa Cruz County and exploring the nuances of the Central Coast. She is especially grateful that she doesn't have to shovel snow anymore. |
Debora Bone,
Nursing Instructor, Cabrillo College Debora was born in Connecticut to a family of itinerant academics. Her childhood was divided between East and West coasts, and a year in Europe, before she went to Swarthmore College and received a BA in French. She then earned a nursing degree in Geneva, Switzerland and moved to Santa Cruz in 1979, where she helped many women have babies at the Community Hospital Birthing Center. After the birth of her own daughter, Debora founded Mothersong, a support group for mothers and young children. She later received a doctorate in Medical Sociology from UCSF, focusing her research on the emotional care provided by nurses. After graduation, Debora joined the nursing faculty at Cabrillo. She is currently president of the Cabrillo College Federation of Teachers. When not busy with all of the above, Debora enjoys hiking the beautiful central coast and taking photos of rocks, water, trees and clouds. |
John Bono,
Manager, Business & Real Estate Contracts Office, University of California, Santa Cruz John is presently Manager of the Business and Real Estate Contracts Office at the University of California, Santa Cruz, a position he has held since arriving in Santa Cruz in 2001. John's responsibilities include providing consultation to campus departments on contract matters, and coordinating real estate activities such as commercial leasing, property acquisition, and license administration. His career at the University of California began in 1998 at UC Berkeley where John was a Contract Analyst for the Division of Capital Projects. John received a B.A. in Political Science from San Diego State University in 1995, and a J.D. in 1998 from the University of Bridgeport/Quinnipiac College School of Law in Connecticut. John is a member of the Northern California Golf Association and DeLaveaga Golf Course in Santa Cruz. John's spouse, Lisa, is also employed at UC Santa Cruz, where she is Marketing Director of the Alumni Association. |

Mark Boos, District Director, Junior Achievement of Silicon Valley & Monterey Bay Mark was raised in Iowa. He joined the Marines at 17 to see the world and had the opportunity to visit most of Asia and Central America as a "goodwill" ambassador. Following "four in the Corps," he returned to Iowa and received his AS prior to moving to Santa Cruz to major in Marine Biology at UC Santa Cruz. After spending 15 years in high tech marketing and sales, Mark made the jump to Junior Achievement. His goal is to develop business/education partnerships delivering JA programs that educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise; understand business, economics and ethics within a framework that promotes workforce readiness; and the value of staying in school. Mark is involved in Cub Scouting, the Divorce Recovery Program at Santa Cruz Bible Church and various other volunteer activities. An avid outdoorsman, Mark enjoys fishing, hiking and Highland Games. He lives in Aromas with daughter Sarah and son, Doug, and their chocolate lab, Snickers. |
Kate Brovarney,
Scholarship Coordinator,
Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County Born and raised in California, Kate has left the state twice and regretted it both times. The people and the political climate, extensive opportunities to experience fine art and culture and, most of all, the Pacific Ocean are magnets that keep her here. Although she has a degree in botany, studied horticulture at Cornell University, and has spent most of her career surrounded by plants, she moved into the field of nonprofits in 1992. After receiving her Development Director certificate from the University of San Francisco, she worked in University Advancement at UC Santa Cruz for five years. She now works for the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County where, in addition to being the Scholarship Coordinator, she works with program department staff to ensure effective and efficient grant making to the community. She enjoys the people she meets in the nonprofit arena and finds the work both inspiring and fulfilling. |
Marilou Buono,
Adminstrator/Director,
Dominican Home Health Marilou is the Administrator/Director of Dominican Home Health which is a department of Dominican Hospital that provides skilled clinical care to adults and new moms and babies of Santa Cruz County. Marilou received her B.S. in Nursing from Mount Saint Mary's College. Her clinical background, before she found home care as a specialty, included not only the traditional hospital setting, but also working in the oil fields of Bakersfield providing emergent industrial nursing care. She has over 24 years of nursing experience with 12 years devoted to home health. She and her family have lived in Santa Cruz for only three years, transplanting themselves from the desert in Southern California. Marilou, her husband and three girls love to explore Santa Cruz County every weekend, enjoying the diversity of activities and natural habitats that Santa Cruz County affords. |
Beata Chapman, Ph.D.,
Executive Director,
7th Avenue Center Beata Chapman is Executive Director of 7th Avenue Center, a locked psychiatric treatment facility in Santa Cruz that serves counties throughout California. In addition to managing the day-to-day operations of the facility, she is currently facilitating the design of culturally competent approaches to the delivery of mental health services. Beata moved to Santa Cruz from Orange County, where she worked as an organization development and research consultant for over 13 years. She holds a doctorate in organizational psychology and has taught systems science and psychology at both graduate and undergraduate levels. In addition to her work in the mental health field, Beata continues to consult as a professional coach and facilitator. Dr. Chapman serves on the board of directors of the Santa Cruz Zen Center, where she is also actively involved in fund development for a major capital campaign. |
Bob Correa,
Executive Director,
The Diversity Center Bob has been Executive Director of this community center serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community of Santa Cruz County for the past year. Prior to that, Bob spent three years serving on the board of the center and working to bring it up from its all-volunteer operation. Prior to coming to Santa Cruz permanently in 1998, Bob operated a small corporation of 10 employees in the S.F. Bay Area, providing computer network installation service. Operating this business for 14 years provided Bob with a tremendous amount of business experience, which he is thrilled to be bringing to a place where it's needed - here in the nonprofit community. Denny Carroll is Bob's Domestic Partner of 18 years. Together they have been involved constantly as volunteers to nonprofits and other social groups seeking to improve the quality of life for LGBT people. |
Carlos Cruz,
Executive Assistant,
Familia Center Carlos was born and raised in Guadalajara, México and immigrated to the US in his late teens. He attended Cabrillo College and then transferred to UC Santa Cruz, where he earned a B.A. in Latino and Latin American Studies, with an emphasis in politics. He also follows closely the Latino political participation, especially after Propositions 187, 209, and 227 passed. He graduated in the spring of 2000, and began an M.A. in education, and is taking a leave of absence from the program. He joined Familia Center in the spring of 2001 as the Executive Assistant and has strong interests in youth development and education. He also has two beautiful active boys and co-parents with his ex-wife, Michelle. Besides spending time with his children, Carlos loves mountain biking, reading, hiking, and eating. |
